The Class of 2009

Webphoto2

According to Beloit College, the majority of college freshmen entering college for the first time this fall were born in 1987. They also:

1.  Andy Warhol, Liberace, Jackie Gleason, and Lee Marvin have always been dead.
2. They don't remember when "cut and paste" involved scissors.
3.  Heart-lung transplants have always been possible.
4.  Bill Gates has always been worth at least a billion dollars.
5.  Boston has been working on "The Big Dig" all their lives.
6.  Condoms have always been advertised on television.
7.  Pay-Per-View television has always been an option.
8.  They never had the fun of being thrown into the back of a station wagon with six others.
9.  Iran and Iraq have never been at war with each other.
10. They are more familiar with Greg Gumbel than with Bryant Gumbel.
11.  Philip Morris has always owned Kraft Foods.
12.  Al-Qaida has always existed with Osama bin Laden at its head.
13.  Pixar has always existed.
14. Car stereos have always rivaled home component systems.
15. Jimmy Swaggart and Jim Bakker have never preached on television.
16.  Voice mail has always been available.
17.  The federal budget has always been more than a trillion dollars.

Robertson strikes again

"Televangelist Pat Robertson mused yesterday on his television show "The 700 Club" that the U.S. could save time and money by assassinating Venezuelan president and Bush critic Hugo Chavez. "We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability," Robertson said.

"We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator. It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with." Not exactly the gospel, is it?"

Saturation Evangelism

"The New York Times describes the film as a “a 1979 box office flop” with a “gooey soundtrack and a British voiceover”, but Jesus Video Project America believes the “Jesus” video is an effective tool for “saturation evangelism.” Since 1992, the ministry has mass-mailed over 20 million copies on DVD and videotape to households in Alabama, Hawaii and South Carolina and large sections of Ohio and Texas (a county-by-county distribution in North Carolina is currently under way). Not everyone, though, welcomes the video proselytization. After physician Robert Cosby bought 1.7 million copies and mailed them in 1998 to every household in Alabama, he found a copy of the video in his front yard with a note that said, "Jesus has returned."

Godcast ?

" The podcast is becoming the Godcast. In a phenomenon which has amazed the clergy, thousands of worshippers are using their iPods to listen to sermons.  While most people use their fashionable portable music players to download their favourite pop tunes from the internet, many are adding a spiritual element to their playlists.

The Rev Leonard Payne, the vicar of a remote parish in Suffolk, has been overwhelmed by the response after he posted some of his homilies on the Apple iTunes store last month. ""We were stunned. Within a short period of time, over 2,400 people had downloaded one of the sermons,"" he said yesterday."

Jesus of Suburbia

I was listening to and thinking about the lyrics of the song Jesus of Suburbia by GreenDay this week:

" Hearts recycled but never saved
From the cradle to the grave
We are the kids of war and peace
From Anaheim to the middle east
We are the stories and disciples
  Of the Jesus of suburbia
  Land of make believe
And it don't believe in me"

Paper Jesus

Staind just released their lastest cd called Chapter V . Check out these lyrics from someone on the outside of Christianity looking in:

B0009x777w01_sclzzzzzzz_

"You take this all for granted
All the things they choose to feed you.
By keeping you distracted
Just long enough to bleed you... dry.

A reason for your anger
It's what I need
To recognize the truth
It's what I need
So burn your paper Jesus
And own the things you do
It's what I need

You never question what they sell you
And they've made a corporation
Out of desperate people's feelings... of fear.

Somebody chose these words for you,
Interpretations of the truth.
Somewhere behind your fear they hide
To fill the holes inside.

So burn your paper Jesus
And own the things you do
It's what I need"
